A local animal shelter in Kearney Nebraska named the Kearney Area animal shelter, has been in business for 15 years. They recently hit a milestone of 10,000 adoptions! The shelter is run by executive director Olivia Derr, Vet Tech, Erin Kreutzer, Assistant Shelter Manager, Roxy Lane, Veterinarians, Dr. Brandon, and Dr. Pao Beebout, and Community Outreach Coordinator, Robynn Hernandez.
Olivia Derr thanks their communities support and tries to encourage others to help as well by saying,
"We want the community to get involved, even if you're a business. If you want to do something, let us know, we'd love to partner with local businesses and get everyone involved"
Although they have just hit a huge milestone, donations and volunteers are still extremely important. They don't make any money from adoptions so they have also mainly relied on donations of supplies and money, grants, volunteers, and foster homes. Because of Covid-19, they have not been able to have any volunteers. But they hope that volunteers are able to come back soon!
KAAS is also a no-kill shelter. A lot of shelters are not no-kill shelters which means they kill healthy and treatable animals when there is a lack of space in order to free up space. So since KAAS is a no-kill shelter they do not kill any healthy and treatable animals for any reason. On their website they state,
"There is no time limit imposed on animals in our care. As long as the animal is medically and behaviorally healthy, it remains with us as long as it takes to be adopted. We partner with other animal welfare organizations and specialized rescues to help find loving homes for animals"
